If Mitt Romney wraps up the Republican nomination, he’ll
likely pick Florida Senator Marco Rubio for his running mate – or at least
that’s the conventional wisdom.
But he may be looking at other considerations than just who can help
with the Hispanics.
After all,
Rubio is young, is needed in the Senate, and may not deliver votes from non
Cuban Hispanics. Romney would do
well to choose someone who is a good debater, could easily take his place if
necessary, and who has ideas on how to fix our country after years of Obama
decay. I doubt he’ll select Newt
Gingrich. Paul Ryan is another
idea man – young, and currently the GOP’s most significant member of Congress –
by far. A win would take Ryan out
of the Congress, but that might be okay.
Ryan could be Romney’s point man on budget issues and fixing our broken
entitlement system. Paul
Ryan would be a running mate who matters.
