What happens when an accused mass murderer engineers a culture conflict to stall his trial? That’s what we’ve got with Major Nidal Malik Hasan who is using a beard to gum up the works.
He knows what he did and he knows that he will eventually be tried and that conviction is a near certainty. So he’s toying with the military court by testing America’s commitment to pluralism. In this country, we respect freedom of religion – even religions that have the capacity to turn violent. But, at the same time, the rules in this military court say – no beard. So Hasan has grown one to see what happens. What do we do now? It is a fact that anybody can do anything and declare it part of a religion. Islam is a world religion, but it conflicts with our system in many ways – and this is just one example. To be Islamic in America, something has to give – and it’s our country. Hold him down, and shave the beard.
