With or without Obamacare, the days of going to a small,
patient-centered doctor’s office are just about over.
In my community, the Scott & White system has either
acquired or partnered with Santa Fe Hospital, Metroplex, King’s Daughters and
Hillcrest. Consumer choice is
vanishing and the trend is nationwide.
The reason is government pressure to cut Medicare spending which
accounts for 36 percent of revenue.
Obamacare calls for closer integration of providers – and that will
likely continue in any case. Since
the passage of the healthcare law, there have been eighty-six hospital mergers
nationwide. Experts say we will
soon have fewer hospital systems. But they will be colossal. The Obama administration seems to think
these healthcare behemoths will provide more efficient and personal care. They will enjoy “economies of scale,”
but that addresses cost – not care.
If you’re an older patient – good luck.
