Lou Dobbs Ends Tenure at CNN

by Lynn Woolley

November 11, 2009

Moments ago, Lou Dobbs told his audience that he has asked to be released from his contract.  Dobbs said that Wednesday's broadcast is his final one on CNN.  As fate would have it, I had been on the phone earlier in the afternoon with Bob LaGrega, one of Lou's producers.

We were discussing an arrangement to carry Lou's business report on the Lynn Woolley Show.  Bob asked me about Fort Hood, and possibly going on Lou's show to discuss the massacre.

Here is the account of Lou's resignation from CNN from the Baltimore Sun:

Longtime CNN anchorman Lou Dobbs announced his resignation on-air Wednesday night after almost 30 years at the all-news network.

After announcing that he had a "personal note" for viewers just before the first commercial break at 7:10 p.m., Dobbs said, "this will be my last broadcast on CNN."

Dobbs said he had been in meetings with CNN President Jonathan Klein who had agreed to let him out of his contract. In truth, CNN has been trying for months to find a way to part company with Dobbs who had become a liability because of his political views on such issues as immigration and the birth of President Barack Obama. Dobbs had persisted ijn gicing credence on his nightly show to "birthers" who questioned whether Ptresident Obama was a U.S. citizen despite clear warning from Klein that management was not pleased.

The most recent embarrassment for CNN came with Latino groups protesting statements made by Dobbs urging more restrictive immigration processes even as the cable channel was premiering an important documentary series titled "Latino in America" from Soledad O'Brien.
