Logic Minute

Just a couple of questions into the Clinton-Obama debate in Hollywood, I switched to an episode of “Lost” on DVD.  As Hurley would say, I was one disappointed dude.  I was expecting an actual debate since it was just the two of them.  But it was all policy-wonk talk – in a word, boring.  The problem with the two remaining Democrats is that there isn’t a nickel’s worth of difference in their policies except on the issue of drivers’ licenses for illegals.

THE XL NFL SUPER BOWL IS SUNDAY FEBRUARY 5TH IN DETROIT
To lure crowds for the XL Super Bowl, Detroit has made drastic attempts to spruce up the city. Detroit has had a lot with which to contend. MOTOWN records left Detroit for the west coast. Over a one million drop in population has occured, which leaves a little over 950,000 residents. Currently, over 80% of Detroit's urban population is minority. Urban Detroit has fallen into disrepair. Former elaborate mansions can be bought for $50,000 to $100,000, but they have been stripped of all valuables.

FOX NEWS SUNDAY JOINS RADIO
On Sunday, February 6, 2006, Fox News Sunday With CHRIS WALLACE will begin broadcasts at noon EST on its network affiliated radio stations. FNS panelists include Fox News Washington Managing Editor BRIT HUME, Weekly Standard Editor BILL KRISTOL, and NPR’s MARA LIASSON and JUAN WILLIAMS.

BLAKE LINDSAY (Dallas, TX) blake@blakelindsay.com Subject: Billy Thorman. Hello Jim: I just want you to know, I still enjoy every column you crank out. You have certainly accumulated some good interesting people who like your articles and emails, as much as I do. I thoroughly enjoy hearing what's going on in their lives, and point of view on both past and present broadcasting.

I am sure happy to observe Billy Thorman has joined our fun broadcast circle. He is a good long time friend of mine, who I value very much. I never get tired of sharing our story, about Billy hiring me at KTFM San Antonio. He was the most encouraging PD I ever had. It is difficult to find a program director, who doesn't hesitate to hire a totally blind guy, and expect the very best. Billy Thorman went out of his way, to make it an exciting and learning four years. It was my first full time radio gig. Jim, I wish I could find more people, who are as upbeat as Billy in the broadcast business. Blake Lindsay, Blazin Blake Productions, 214-207-6972 ( www.blakelindsay.com )

When I was Program Director and afternoon drive DJ at KBUC FM-AM from 1968-70, its huge remote broadcast mobile trailer was in constant use all over San Antonio and Bexar county. We nailed KBER FM-AM to the rating wall and hit the target at every toss of our programming dart. At KBUC, we came up with the idea to paint the San Antonio river green on St. Patrick's Day. This has been an annual event along the river walk.

BILLY THORMAN (Ft. Worth, TX) BillyThorman@aol.com I remember the remote unit...Then you probably hired Ricci Ware...And your competitor at the time was KBER with Max Gardiner and Andy Carr. bt

RICCI WARE came to KBUC after I left the building. MAX moved it on over from KBER FM-AM to the new KKYX-680 Country machine.

SONNY RAY STOLZ (Houston, TX) sonnyraystolz@yahoo.com What ever became of Johnny Goyen? I trained him at KIKK. Last I heard he was up around Conroe area. His dad died a couple of years ago. His dad's best friend was the retired president of the Motion Picture Assn. He delivered a eulogy at the funeral. What is that guy's name? Anyway, I found out my mom's best friend is that guy's cousin. Never knew I had Mafia connections until a year ago! (Well, my roommate in Army was a former runner for the Mob. Some stories there.) And, I 've got radio stories about when I was in Army. Later. Some other time.

Have you noticed on the Jock Site (what's it called) when you punch up Russ Knight's name the two listing for the guys, neither one is THE Russ Knight (The Weird Beard) that once worked at KILT in the early '60s. Whatever became of THAT Russ Knight?

How about a Name The Hudsons & Harrigans Trivia. How many sets and mixed sets were there since inception? And variations, such as Hudson & Landry. Man, those albums those two did are hilarious. I've still got 2 or 3. Ajax Liquor Store is the craziest. And Ajax Christmas, I think its called, is off the wall.

Did you ever know Fred Nahas? I worked with him at Winius-Brandon for a time. Real nice guy. Kind of old school stuffed shirt type, but a really interesting fellow. Passed now. You know he was Glenn McCarthy's announcer for those broadcasts over KXYZ from The Shamrock. Man, they had the big time stars flown in from Hollywood all the time. Later, Sonny

When I was in JOE LONG's news department at KBOX-1480 in 1972, the real Weird Beard, RUSS KNIGHT sat on the opposite side of the glass window from me. RUSS kept me in stiches. He's probably one of my favorite people in all of radio.

WFAA (Dallas) sold out its 50% share in the 50kw clear channel 820 frequency to WBAP (Ft. Worth). After the dust cleared, WFAA-570 and WBAP-820 were still standing. Meanwhile, KLIF-1190 was sold and resold to where it was no longer a giant. Its call letters were abandoned for something else. WFAA grabbed them. So, it's now KLIF-570. What's ironic is that I was a DJ on both WFAA-820 and WFAA-570 (1967-68), plus a newscaster on KLIF-1190 (1972). Those call letter switches will never ring my chime.

BOB LOWRY (Monte Rio, CA) robsiriridge@aol.com Good grief, thought WFAA call letters would remain forever...that said...NOTHING is forever. There is no question that satellite radio will eventually be the source for those who want infinite audio quality...it is absolutely amazing...eclipsing CD audio in your vehicle. AM and FM will be the venues of specialty (read boutique) programming...over the air network TV is slowly being eaten up by cable choices which offer cutting edge content...in our lifetime we will see the end of the old network television evening news programs...no more half hour news casts...the tabloid news hannels, offering nothing but pablum to the viewer, have won the ballgame...they're just mopping up the blood on the floor...glad we were in the biz when there was some civility, truth and honesty...today it really is ALL ABOUT THE BOTTOM LINE and nothing more...tragic. Will talk to Bud today and will pass along your greetings. Bob Lowry

700 HD RADIO STATIONS ARE NOW ON THE AIR
On January 26, 2006, WXKB-FM of BEASLEY Broadcasting became the 700th US radio station to broadcast in HD. ROBERT STRUBLE, president and CEO of IBIQUITY Digital Corporation, which developed HD Radio technology, said, As a result of broadcasters converting stations at a pace of more than one per day, 6 in 10 Americans now have access to HD Radio broadcasts. We expect the growth of HD Radio to accelerate as more listeners look to take advantage of the benefits of digital AM and FM broadcasting, which include dramatically improved sound quality, innovative content, continued access to local news and information, and no subscription fees.

BOSTON ACOUSTICS HAS A NEW HD DIGITAL RADIO
For $299, we can now buy a new BOSTON ACOUSTICS Recepter Radio to pull in quality HD radio stations. PHIL COHN, Boston Acoustics vice president of Sales, tells us, We’re very excited about the level of interest our Recepter Radio HD has had from both consumers and the media. We were the first to offer a table radio featuring digital HD Radio technology and are the first to be able to make this technology accessible to a broader audience of radio listeners. We continue to work closely with the broadcasting industry, which is quickly launching more and more HD Radio stations and HD2 channels across the country.

BOB CROWLEY (Ft. Worth-Arlington, TX) bobcrowley@mail.ev1.net Jim, Here's a first. Todd Jefferies left KLBJ to take a job as News Director of KRLD. He's been in Dallas about three months, but now he's turned in his notice and says he's going back to Austin. KLBJ is offering his job back. My friends at KRLD are very disappointed. They tell me Todd came in, and the first thing he said to them was, 'what do you need?'. He not only kept the administrative end going, he filled in as a reporter and anchor. My friend Kevin Connor, morning man for KGSR is very happy. He speaks very highly of Todd, and the contributions he has made to cluster-mates KGSR and KLBJ FM in addition to his morning anchor position with KLBJ AM. (Management might have known something, since they never took him off their web site, and didn't hire a replacement.) Has that ever happened to you, where qou quit a job, and then were able to come back within months? Me neither. Bob Crowley

DONALD E. WILDMON (Tupelo, MS) afapetition@afa.net SPECIAL ALERT! NBC to mock the Crucifixion of Christ. Dear Jim, NBC, fresh from giving us the anti-Christian The Book of Daniel, has decided to hit back at the Christian community by presenting an episode of Will and Grace which mocks the crucifixion of Christ. On the April 13 edition of NBC's Will and Grace, Britney Spears will appear as a Christian conservative sidekick to Sean Hayes' homosexual character, Jack, who hosts his own talk show. Jack's fictional network, Out TV, is bought by a Christian TV network, leading to Spears contributing a cooking segment called "Cruci-fixin's." To further denigrate Christianity, NBC chose to air it the night before Good Friday. NBC does not treat Jews, Muslins or other religions with such disrespect. Yet the network demonstrates a deep of hostility toward followers of Christ. Sincerely, Don, Donald E. Wildmon, Founder and Chairman, American Family Association ( www.afa.net )

RITA KRESS (Houston, TX) atir511@yahoo.com Jim, Sooooo glad that you have gotten yourself the perfect replacement for Kei-Kou...Rita

There is no perfect replacement for KEI-KOU. Her memory lingers everywhere. TEJAS brings a whole new chapter. She's a great big sweetheart, too. TEJAS is full of energy but has calmed down quite a lot. She's settled into her new home like a glove.

BARRY KILGORE (Austin, TX) gs14darkstar@yahoo.com KTEM's owners tried to hire me back a few years ago.
I remember the guy you were talking about --late blooming hippy at KTEM. His wife and he were divorcing I think when I met him. BJ is a great guy. I worked with him at KTEM then he hired me in Austin years later.

I started a V/O talent biz on the side when I lived at Lake Travis. It got so lucrative I quit all other radio stuff. I got to do the voice for the Texas Crimestopper TV Campaign regional spots and have done a lot of political campaigns, narrations for NASA, Rockwell Space Operations, Bendix, TracWorks, the Disney Company (at Jay West's studios in Houston) and a really cool narration for Lockheed and the Pentagon. That was a weapons systems narration that was marked secret/confidential. I was told by some general that I could talk about it after I saw the weapons being used...which I did in the first Gulf War.

Never got to work with Lundy but what a great voice. "Stevie on the Lundy show"..."Walk on world"

Good to hear you're a dog person. Most of my best friends are or were dogs. German Shepards I really like. My last dog was a Giant Border Collie that was as big as the Shepards I had.

You know, Jim, I would actually consider doing radio again if there was a station where it was run by real radio people and done right. Oh well...Barry Kilgore

JOHN ROOK (Coeur D'Alene, ID) jr@johnrook.com Subject: Houston police arrest eight from New Orleans. January 28, 2006 THE WASHINGTON TIMES By Hugh Aynesworth - A multilevel gang task force in Houston yesterday announced the arrests of eight hurricane refugees from New Orleans -- a group Houston police say is responsible for at least 11 slayings and numerous burglaries and thefts in the metropolitan area since November. "We're talking about what appears to be a rivalry between two groups of individuals who were associated with two different housing projects in New Orleans," Houston police Capt. M.D. Brown told The Washington Times. "Their rivalry began several years ago -- certainly prior to Katrina -- and carried over to Houston."

Houston's crime rate spiked noticeably in the final months of 2005, and police officials have attributed much of the increase to lawbreakers who moved to the city after Hurricane Katrina. The eight men who were arrested, as well as three others who are still being sought, are all between the ages of 20 and 27, according to the Houston Chronicle.

MARSHA JORDAN (Lexington, MS) mj57@bellsouth.net Jim, I did hear about the big crime wave in NOLA after Katrina. Barry, in one of his last phone messages to Susan, said that there was "lootin' and shootin'" going on. Thanks for giving me "the rest of the story"--I will be praying for Houston. I know that Jackson, MS is housing some refugees. I don't know about any new crime wave going on there, but I haven't really been keeping up with the news much lately. I do know that Jackson's new mayor has been really cracking down on the already existing crime wave in that area. MJ

STEVE HARDER-KUCERA (Las Vegas, NV) steve@betterwaywebsites.com Subject: Two Pickadillos Shows This Week.
