Logic Minute

Just a couple of questions into the Clinton-Obama debate in Hollywood, I switched to an episode of “Lost” on DVD.  As Hurley would say, I was one disappointed dude.  I was expecting an actual debate since it was just the two of them.  But it was all policy-wonk talk – in a word, boring.  The problem with the two remaining Democrats is that there isn’t a nickel’s worth of difference in their policies except on the issue of drivers’ licenses for illegals.

A LEGENDARY COUNTRY MUSIC SONGWRITER HAS DIED
CINDY WALKER came to life in Mart, Texas on July 20, 1918. CINDY went on to become one of the finest song writers in Country music history. In 1970, MS WALKER became a charter member of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. In 1997, CINDY was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame. On Thursday, March 23, 2006, CINDY WALKER died at her home in Mexia, Texas at the age of 87.
MS WALKER was well known for her ability to tailor songs for just about any singer's style. CINDY has had Top Ten hits during each of the five decades from the 1940s through the 1980s. Some of MS WALKER's famous early tunes include Country standards such as Cherokee Maiden and You Don't Know Me.
F.P. EILAND, CINDY's grandfather, wrote many familiar hymns. Hold to God's Unchanging Hand is one of them. CINDY appeared in Texas stage shows. MS WALKER journeyed to Hollywood to pitch her tunes to the stars. In 1941, she received a recording contract with Decca records. That same year, she filmed the first Soundie musical short, Seven Beers With the Wrong Man. In 1944, MS WALKER had a Top Ten hit with her version of When My Blue Moon Turns to Gold Again.
CINDY's talents included songwriter, singer, guitar and dancer. MS WALKER had the looks of a star, but decided to concentrate on her song writing ability. GENE AUTRY made popular CINDY's Blue Canadian Rockies. AL DEXTER recorded her Triflin' Gal. The AMES BROTHERS put to wax China Doll. While still in California, she wrote more than 50 tunes for BOB WILLS, who loved her lyrics, which include Cherokee Maiden, Bubbles in My Beer, and You’re From Texas. ERNEST TUBB counted on CINDY to come up with hits. ERNEST recorded her Warm Red Wine, Two Glasses Joe, and Hey Mr. Bluebird, as well as many other of her tunes.
In 1954, MS WALKER returned to Texas and tried to divide her time between Mexia and Nashville. CINDY's
1950s classics include EDDY ARNOLD's You Don't Know Me and Take Me In Your Arms and Hold Me. HANK SNOW's The Gold Rush Is Over and The Next Voice You Hear. GEORGE MORGAN's I Love Everything About You. One of my favorite CINDY WALKER tunes is WEBB PIERCE's I Don't Care. JIM REEVES' Anna Marie.
In the 1960s, ROY ORBISON's Dream Baby (How Long Must I Dream), JIM REEVES' Distant Drums, JERRY WALLACE's In the Misty Moonlight, JACK GREENE's You Are My Treasure, SONNY JAMES' Heaven Says Hello, WILMA BURGESS' Fifteen Days, and STONEWALL JACKSON' Leona became big hits out of MS WALKER's pen.
In the decades to follow, GLEN CAMPBELL, RICKY SKAGGS, RAY CHARLES, LACY J. DALTON, RIDERS IN THE SKY, MICKEY GILLEY, and MERLE HAGGARD are some of those who kept CINDY's songwriting legacy alive.
In the 1990s, MS WALKER's health began to put a damper on things. In 1991, the death of her mother, OREE WALKER, who was her accompanist on the piano, made it a little difficult, but CINDY continued to write. In 1998, Southland Records put out the LEON RAUSCH album, Close to You: A Twenty Song Salute to the Music of Cindy Walker, which included the new ballad she had penned called, Ruidoso. CINDY WALKER died at the age of 87.
JOHN HALE (Austin, TX) rs-4189@mobilemagicmusic.com Hi Jim, I just thought I'd pass along a sad note to you. Cindy Walker passed away Thursday night in Mexia, Texas. If her name doesn't ring a bell, check out Willie Nelson's latest cd. It's a collection of Cindy's songs, and dedicated to her. Cindy is in the Country Music Hall Of Fame as one of the greatest song writers, having written hits for artists like Eddy Arnold, Roy Orbison, Bob Wills, Ray Charles, and many others. On a personal note, when I was a youngster growing up in the First Presbyterian church in Mexia, Cindy was my choir leader. She was not only a terrific song writer, but a genuinely humble and nice lady, and will be missed a lot.
Her funeral service will be held Monday morning at 10:30 at the First Presbyterian Church in Mexia, Texas. She died Thursday evening at Parkview Regional Hospital in Mexia, following what was described as a lengthy illness. It can be mentioned of her that the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville refers to her as 'perhaps the finest female country music composer in history'. (That's straight off of the Hall's website, www.countrymusichalloffame.com/inductees/cindy_walker.html)
I haven't done the math, but she was born July 20th, 1918 in Mart, Texas and had lived in Mexia, Texas since the late '50's, when she moved back to the state from Hollywood. Yours Truly John Hale Mobile Magic Music 512.336.8742 (33.Music) jhale@mobilemagicmusic.com "We're at the best parties!"
UNIVISION BUYOUT
REUTERS has announced that a consorsium is lined up to acquire Los Angeles-based UNIVISION, a Spanish-language media company which is the #1 Spanish-language broadcaster in America. The group includes Mexican broadcaster TELEVISA, PROVIDENCE EQUITY (a U.S. private equity firm), plus, U.S. billionaire HAIM SABAN and the CISNEROS family of Venezuela. U.S. law restricts foreign ownership of TV stations to 25%, unless the FCC determines it is otherwise in the public interest. UNIVISION is reported to have a market value of about $10 billion.
TELEVISA, UNIVISION's main supplier of programming, says it wants to increase its 11% stake in UNIVISION. The CISNEROS family, which controls Venezuela's VENEVISION, holds about 13 percent of UNIVISION. DAVID BANK, an analyst at RBC Capital Markets says, It's not a particularly big surprise that Televisa is involved in a consortium to buy the company with a private equity firm, which would be crucial to getting around foreign ownership restrictions.
Media experts say that TELEVISA has close to $1 billion in cash. Analysts have said TELEVISA would have little problem in raising more money to bid for a higher stake in UNIVISION or to line up potential new partners. The CEOs of media giants NEWS Corporation and TIME WARNER have said they would look at acquiring UNIVISION. Foreign ownership rules are not foreign to TELEVISA Chairman EMILIO AZCARRAGA JEAN, who previously has toyed with the idea of applying for U.S. citizenship, the same as Australian-born media mogul RUPERT MURDOCH did when he bypassed U.S. limits on media ownership by foreigners.
In 2005, TELEVISA partnered with local producers to launch TV channels in Spain, with only 40% of the venture but controled the management. TELEVISA's programming deal with Univision in 2000 which extends through 2017. In 2005, the gamble took a sour note when TELEVISA sued UNIVISION in a dispute over royalties and claimed a breach of contract. Industry leaders say TELEVISA seeks a way out of the deal and think that a possible sale of UNIVISION could be good news for the Mexican giant.
JOHN ROOK (Coeur d'Alene, ID) jr@johnrook.com Subject: Hispanic radio is leading... No longer limited to just a few communities, Spanish language radio is heard all across America. They of course will benefit most from a larger Hispanic population. Thus far, Hispanic radio has given the subject far more attention than English speaking talk show hosts. Many waste valuable air time discussing non issues of little or no importance to their listeners or their country. In the days ahead, it will be interesting to see who does the best job of covering the immigration issue...at this point Hispanic radio is leading. ( www.JohnRook.com )
