Logic Minute

Just a couple of questions into the Clinton-Obama debate in Hollywood, I switched to an episode of “Lost” on DVD.  As Hurley would say, I was one disappointed dude.  I was expecting an actual debate since it was just the two of them.  But it was all policy-wonk talk – in a word, boring.  The problem with the two remaining Democrats is that there isn’t a nickel’s worth of difference in their policies except on the issue of drivers’ licenses for illegals.

HI THERE!
All the news that is news! Here's what's happening in our world:

JOHN LENNON HAS A NEW RECORD
A long forgotten and rare tune by JOHN LENNON has been discovered. Attica State was penned and put to tape by LENNON more than 30 years ago. The tune will be in the soundtrack of a new documentary, The U.S Vs JOHN LENNON. Modern day recording technology has upgraded JOHN's human rights ballad. The new LENNON flick will be onscreen at your local theater in September 2006.

MEL GIBSON DOWN AND OUT IN MALIBU
According to E!Online.com, OSCAR winning actor, director and producer, MEL COLUMCILLE GIBSON (50), was held by Malibu gendarmes early Friday morning July 28, 2006 for what authorities say is a DUI charge. The Road Warrior was reportedly doing 80 in a 55 zone along the beautiful Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu. Braveheart posted a $5000 bail and was set free. MEL later apologized with the Passion of CHRIST to his fans. MEL said that he has had a battle with insobriety all his life and that he's embarrassed about his relapse. ALAN NIEROB, Gibson's representative, was unavailable for comment.

GIBSON is thought by many to be an Australian because he uses the Aussie brogue, but MEL was actually born in Peekskill, NY on January 3, 1956. GIBSON was raised in the NY town until he became twelve. MEL is the sixth of eleven kiddos. The GIBSONs moved to Sydney because MEL's dad didn't want his boys to be drafted for the Vietnam War.

MEL has undertaken a new movie through his Icon Productions which will be the next Chronicles of Narnia. The movie is taken from LIBBY BRAY's book trilogy fantasy about 4 Victorian teens and their magical journeys. The first of the three, A GREAT + TERRIBLE BEAUTY, will be directed by CHARLES STURRIDGE who made the movie Fairtytale: A True Story.
GIBSON's latest film, which he directed, Apocalypto, is set in a time 500 years ago in Central America and is spoken in a mystical Mayan lingo.

GIBSON donated money through the Rotary Club and Mexico's family welfare agency to build houses for Mexico's poor in the port city of Veracruz and the city of San Andres Tuxtla to thank them for their help with Apocalypto. The movie was shot in the Veracruz estate jungles of Mexico.

In October 2005, GIBSON met with Mexico's President VINCENTE FOX to donate $1 million to help the citzens recover from Hurricane STAN, which left more than 1,500 people dead or missing in Central America and Mexico. Apocalypto is due in your neighborhood theater just in time for Christmas 2006.

MOVERS AND SHAKERS

LISA ANN BONK will move it on over to ABC's Flagship Newstalk Radio 77 WABC-770 in NY as GSM on August 28, 2006. FRED BENNETT left the position after 13 months. LISA has spent 15 years at INTEREP's McGavren Guild Division where she handled Northeast and Midwest stations from her NY office. BONK will report to WABC President/GM STEVE BORNEMAN.

KTRS-550 was storm struck on July 19, 2006. Two of its four towers were damaged. KTRS is owned by the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team and is their flagship. The FCC issued a temporary waiver for 5kw KTRS to broadcast nightly in all directions at a reduced power of 1250 watts to protect JACOR Broadcasting's 55 the Talk Station WKRC-550 5kw signal in Cincinnati is not far away.

That strong regional 550kc frequency happens to be quite popular with the FCC. Texas has two: CBS' 5kw KTSA-550, San Antonio and Clear Channel's 5kw The Voice of West Texas KCRS-550, Midland which are both News-Talk.

WHJJ-920 Clear Channel's 5kw Talk radio in Providence, RI was fined $10,000 by the FCC because of what was termed an improper public file. WHJJ's license was renewed.

LESLIE WAYNE HODGES (Midland-Odessa, TX) leshodges969@yahoo.com Subject: Bubble Puppy. Hi Jim, the promoter for The Bubble Puppy was in his early to mid 20's who enjoyed coming by KABH 1510 in Midland on Cotton Flat Road during the summer of 1970. Twice that I remember. Brought us several copies of Hot Smoke and Sassafras on clear green, yellow and a red vinyl 45 rpm. He always showed an interest in what I and KBAH radio was doing. Do you know who this might have been and where he and The Bubble Puppy are today?Did WFAA 570 ever play Hot Smoke and Sassafras? I enjoy your news.Thanks. Leslie Wayne Hodges, Midland Texas

THE BUBBLE PUPPY was another of those one hit groups with their Hot Smoke & Sasafrass. The tune came out in the spring of 1969. It hit Billboard on March 15, 1969 and soared to the #14 position in America. But, it was an even bigger hit here in their homestate of Texas. The BUBBLE PUPPY is from Houston. THE BUBBLE PUPPY later recorded as DEMIAN but never bubbled over onto Billboard again.

The members of BUBBLE PUPPY were ROD PRICE, ROY COX, TODD POTTER, and DAVID FORE. It could have been one of those fellas who visited Midland's KABH-1510 in 1970. BP's record was on the INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS label (#128 ). Color vinyl copies of BP's hit tune were handed out as DJ promos in 1970.

If you happen to have a pristine copy of one of those colored vinyl BUBBLE PUPPY records, it would be worth $25-$50 by record collectors. A black vinyl DJ promo 45 rpm BP record which was issued from 1969-70 is worth $20-$30. Standard release 45s by BP are going for $15-$25. BP albums are worth $100-$200.

When I was a DJ on WFAA-820 and WFAA-570 from 1967-68, both stations were what were then referred to as Middle of the Road music radio stations. A.H. BELO in Dallas, who owned WFAA-820, WFAA-570, WFAA FM and WFAA-TV CH 8 was 50% sharecropper of the two WFAA AM frequencies. WBAP in Ft. Worth owned the other 50% of the 2 AM frequencies.

Of course, the desired spot on the dial was 50,000 watt clear channel 820 kc. WFAA always figured they would eventually own the 820 kc blow torch. In 1970, for AM frequencies it became the rule of the day to refer to AM radio frequencies as kilohertz (kHz) instead of kilocycles (kc). FM frequencies are millihertz (mHz).

WFAA set the tone for the 820 frequency with more of an up tempo bright Contemporary version of MOR. WBAP held the programming reins of 570 kc with a more subdued version with a more E-Z Listening version of MOR music. Each did their best to abide by the other's guidelines.

This was a unique situation in American radio which never had been done before or after. Every 6 hours, the  frequency changeover took place. My show during the week was 8 pm-midnight on the powerful clear channel 820 spot on the dial. Received cards, letters and phone calls from most of the United States. On a clear night, the calls really poured in from all over our great country.

On Sunday afternoons, my DJ program was from noon-6 pm on 5000 watt WFAA-570. It certainly was no slouch signal-wise because phone calls came in from all over north and central Texas.

CHARLIE VAN was the Program Director of WFAA radio. DENSON WALKER was radio manager and MIKE SHAPIRO was the Grand Duke of WFAA radio and television. WFAA was Communications Center for the Great Southwest.

Just about the time I arrived at WFAA in 1967, all the WFAA FM DJs were turned out onto the streets in exchange for an automation machine. When I got off the air at WFAA-820 at midnight, would hurry over to the WFAA FM autodrive room and change out the 6 large heavy reels of music tapes. Kind of tricky because you had to stay ahead of the autopilot.

VAN wanted me to be able to play more Top 40 tunes on my 8 pm-midnight show which went out all over America. Oh, incidently, we never referred to our DJ shows as shows. At WFAA, they were programs - This is the JIM ROSE Program on WFAA.

The best that CHARLIE could get from WFAA's big wigs was when I spun a Top 40 tune, it was to be treated as a special feature with a recorded intro and outro. Some of the tunes I was able to mix in with ANDY WILLIAMS, VIKKI CARR and The RAY CONNIFF SINGERS were by JOHN FRED & THE PLAYBOYS, THE LEMON PIPERS, OTIS REDDING and ARETHA FRANKLIN. Hot Smoke & Sasafrass  byTHE BUBBLE PUPPY came out a year after I left WFAA, so never did get to give it a spin on 820.

Now, this Top 10 Top 40 stuff was strictly a feature on my nightly 8 pm-midnight program on 50,000 watt clear channel WFAA-820. Did not realize it at the time, but no other WFAA DJ had that special privilege. Just a young Dallas native who lived to play great music for the folks out there in radioland. This was almost like an unmatched wrestling match of music artists which covered both ends of the spectrum. It was lots of fun and added a certain touch of magic to my show, or program.

A.H. BELO also owned The Dallas Morning News which had its palace on the right side of the long wide two-way entrance which led to a guard gate. Two giant media factories side by side. In back of the two spacious buildings were two huge parking lots which were divided by a tall fence, like at a prison. To the left was where all broadcast personnel parked their motor cars. To the right was where newspaper folks layed their chariots to rest for the day.

WFAA always considered themselves far above those hicks in Cowtown at WBAP and would eventually own 100% of the 820 frequency which sent a blow torch to 38 of the United States. Money talks. In the early 1970s, possibly 1972, WBAP layed out $3.5 million on WFAA's large mahogany board room table and the deal was done.

Almost immediately, WBAP switched to Country and then owned Dallas, Ft. Worth and all of north Texas. For many years WBAP-820 was the dominent DFW radio station until FM stepped up to the plate. WBAP's sister station was KSCS FM with a more Contemporary approach to Country music.

Like the great BOB WILLS tune, Time Changes Everything, KLIF-1190, which was the hottest radio station in Dallas from the 1950s to the 1970s was sold and those magic calls became available. WFAA-570 snapped them up and KLIF-570 was born. To this day, I cannot fanthom KLIF as 570, because in 1972, I was behind the mic at the Mighty 1190 and grew up listening to KLIF-1190 in my Dallas homestead.

WFAA-570 switched to All News for awhile then back to music and returned to All News where it remains today. KLIF-570 (WFAA-570) no longer has studios in the gigantic Communications Center factory. Those were the days, my friend...
